Togi Toshiharu (東儀俊美)

Toshiharu TOGI (September 14, 1929 - year of death unknown) is a gagakuka, or a person who plays old Japanese court music, and is also a member of the Japan Art Academy.

He is from Tokyo. He was born to the Togi family, which is one of the Raku family groups in the Shitennoji school that was believed to be founded by HATA no Kawakatsu. His father is Toshisuke Togi. After graduating from private Shohei Junior High School, he entered the Kunaicho gakubu (Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency) in 1941 to study gagaku, and became a master musician of the Kunaicho gakubu in 1949. In 1959, he performed in the United States. In 1962, he started to study under Komei ABE. In 1990, he composed a tune and an accompanying dance called 'Yuki Chiho Fuzokuka Fuzokumai' (Folk Song and Dance of the Yuki Region), which was performed at the Daijo-sai festival (festival to celebrate succession of the emperor). In 1991, he became the Master of the Kunaicho gakubu, and in 1993, the Principle Master of the Kunaicho gakubu. In 1999, he received the Order of the Rising Sun with Gold and Silver Rays. In 2000, he received the Onshi Prize and the Award of the Japan Art Academy, and became a member of the academy. In 2003, he became an instructor at the Kunaicho gakubu and resigned in 2005.
